Preparing for Your Procedure

Depending on the type of procedure you will have, your surgical team will give you specific instructions on how to prepare. It is critically important, for your safety, that you follow all pre-surgical instructions. While specific instructions will vary, general guidelines include:
  • If your surgeon or a nurse asks you questions about what type of medications or other drugs you use or what you had to eat or drink recently, it is important to be truthful.
  • You will need to arrange for a friend or family member to accompany you and provide transportation if your procedure involves anesthesia or sedatives.
  • If you are undergoing surgery, please leave all jewelry, including body jewelry, at home.
  • If you fail to follow instructions, such as not eating prior to surgery or discontinuing nicotine if instructed to do so, then your surgery may be cancelled.

Day of Surgery Reminders

Please leave ample time to travel and arrive promptly at the time you were instructed. Bring your identification, insurance information, and any patient forms you have been asked to fill out. You will meet with your surgical team prior to your procedure and it can be helpful to write down any questions you want to ask them.

Discharge and Recovery

You will be discharged once your surgeon has determined that it is safe for you to leave. Most procedures are day surgeries, so patients typically go home the same day. A staff member will review your aftercare instructions with you. Your safety is our top priority, and it is very important that you attend any scheduled follow-up appointments, take prescribed medications, and follow all other post-operative instructions. Your aftercare instructions will include information on who to call if you have questions or experience complications. You should always call 911 in the case of an emergency.
